The distinctive, well-worn groove in this NY estate sale piece, and its overall shape, resembles a couple different artifacts in Ritchie's Archeology of New York State. First two pics are from Ritchies book: the one with obvious grooves is described as 'whetstone' and other one described as 'simple sinew stone, reverse shows use as whetstone." The last 3 pics are of my artifact. Hard to believe it is not an NA artifact of some sort. Comments?

I believe it is an artifact.

Odd looking , if you think it’s possibly an artifact what would it be used for ??

Just a guess based on Ritchie: a 'whetstone', same as he found in Central NY archeological digs, and as pictured above...used by NA to finely sharpen ....just another guess: bone or antler working edges

the groove does not look natural, but...can you see any continuation of it on the two ends?
