A bit of a shock in my scoop. From my favorite beach in the dry sand this interesting (what I'm assuming is a planchet error) 2000 Lincoln Cent.

The small bit of research I did seems to indicate that it's a real error. Does anyone know more about them?

I have several of those all with different year and mint marks.
A local coin expert visiting our club meeting this month said
that they were either plated in someones garage or were
plated for use as souveniers.

That's just a zinc penny without it's copper coating. Surely an error coin, but I'm not sure if there is any value.

I've done the mercury coating before (a long while ago) and this is definitely not that. The metal is native and solid.

It's also not plated as the details are too crisp and there is just a hint of copper color at the sides of some of the letters .. a bit hard to see in the photos. I've included a detail of the reverse and notice the slight copper color especially around the "ON."

I'm leaning to the genuine error. I just checked the weights and both coins are exactly 2.50 grams.

The very slight copper residue appears to have come off the dies. At 100% unplated sources have this at $100 (another source at $1 to $10)

How can I remove the Copper from a post-1982 penny?
I'm doing a chemistry lab and we have to write a procedure on how to remove the copper from a post 1982 penny. Any one know how to remove the copper from the penny.

Best Answer -
Take 2 oz. of vinegar and add a pinch of sodium. wait till copper dissolves off it and there you go.

So the question is how can you prove a 'genuine error'? (if you can easily strip it off)

Maybe the Federal Gov. found a cheaper metal to make them from :laughing9: :laughing9:

Thats exactly what they did, solid copper was at a loss for making a cent.

I think the weight will tell you as well as the loss of definition on the stripped cent.

How to Make Silver Pennies

1. Pour a spoonful of zinc (1-2 grams) into a small beaker or evaporating dish containing water.
2. Add a small quantity of sodium hydroxide.
3. Alternatively, you could add zinc to a 3M NaOH solution.
4. Heat the mixture to near-boiling, then remove it from heat.
5. Add clean pennies to the solution, spacing them so that they are not touching each other.
6. Wait 5-10 minutes for them to turn silver, then use tongs to remove the pennies from the solution.
7. Rinse the pennies in water, then set them on a towel to dry.
8. You can examine the pennies once you have rinsed them.

This chemical reaction plates the copper in the penny with zinc. This is called galvanization. The zinc reacts with the hot sodium hydroxide solution to form soluble sodium zincate, Na2ZnO2, which is converted to metallic zinc when it touches the surface of the penny.
