I have always discriminated things out. I have never wanted to have to dig every little thing. I am starting to get down about never finding anything good. I am just about to leave to hunt a local abandoned baseball field. The field has been there since the early 1900's. It will be my first hunt not discing things out. Wish me luck.

Good luck. :)

I can't see myself digging a park with no disc., but I dig old sites in the woods with no disc.

You will find many good things. And more not so good things. :-\

But you will find alot of things. :D

First of all Good Luck :icon_thumleft:, secondly, I don't disc at all, advice given to me by shaun7, SS and Crusader. I guess it depends on your particular machine, but if you know your machine, hearing or seeing all hits, you can make the decision whether to dig or not, if thats your way. Sometimes you miss the great find because you have disced out something and the machine, giving it's best guess, tells you it's something it isn't. It takes time, but dig all and find everything.

I typically throw a nickel on the ground, play with the disc until the nickel just drops out, then back off to where the nickel gives a solid signal. This setting generally passes over the smallest foil and iron, but still hits on nickels, jewelry etc.

One dollar gold coins can disc out around foil or a little below, depending on how worn they are.

Funny you bring this up today.
I was on another topic and had someone mention not using discrimination and although I run mine on low I have always used the discriminator until today.
I realized that in the places I hunt no one cares if there are a million holes as the areas I hunt are just too remote.
I ran no discrimination and dug a BUNCH of trash.
I had been over this area twice before but I did find several pennies that I missed before and on about the tenth hole I dug two nails that would have certainly been discriminated out.
I was checking my hits with the discriminator and this target disappeared when I ran low nickel discrimination. In all metal I dug the two nails. I ran the detector back over the hole and picked up a loud and clear signal both in and out of discrimination and it was a 1964 silver dime. It was under those nails and the nails canceled out the silver signal.
It was pretty eye opening.
I did dig a lot of trash but I found coins in an area I had worked before and thought I got everything.
I'm rethinking this if just a nail can blot out a silver signal.
I also dug penny's that were next to trash that gave clipped or rough signals that i wouldn't normally dig, When I removed the trash they came in loud and clear.
I obviously wouldn't dig that way in someones yard but I am thinking that when I am in the mining camps and ghost towns that are completely abandoned I am going to start just digging everything and not use discrimination at all.
It felt funny but I just sat on the ground and dug for a short distance without getting up because the trash signals were so close together.
I was just sitting on the ground and detecting as far as I could reach without getting up LOL!
Made for some slow detecting but I was finding coins in a worked out area.

Well,I was searching a tot lot with my 1236 when i dug up a 14k mans band.
On both My spectrum, and my buddies BH 2200 id,ed it as a solid pulltab.
But on the other hand I,ve dug maybe a hundred pulltabs and zinc pennies this year.
Its strictly a judgement call largely based pn where I,m searching.

This is in comment to Maverick's post. I've done some experimenting with target masking and discovered exactly what you mention. Bottom line is when using all metal, you'll get a signal regardless, whereas with some discrimination, a good target close to trash that's being discriminated out may be missed completely. However, expect to dig more trash.

If you discrim ringpulls and foil..then ya gonna miss gold and silver! A small nails pattern is all i use for discrim, but sometimes the pain and suffering pays off.Besides..digging ringpulls and foil is cleaning the area up and could also mean the difference between finding something and not..the next time you go to the same place! Put the work in and when you go over that ground again without the junk there, all kindsa goodies can show up as you're not discriming out the junk no more!
