In my opinion (as a former rock-hound and mineral-collector, both Invent4hir and Unclemac are correct. Specifically, your find is what we rockhounds call a Chert Nodule, which in your case contains the Jasper form of Chert. More specifically, it is Red Jasper... a highly desirable variety. I recognize it because about 50 years ago I found a couple very nearly identical to yours, in the famous Paint Rock Valley of NE Alabama. The place got its name due to the multitude of colored Chert Nodules and Agates found there.
Almost forgot to mention... Jasper is considered a "Semi-precious" stone. Ever since the Bronze Age, and Ancient Rome, people have used Jasper for jewelry and small statues. Especially, Red Jasper like yours. (I made a couple of beautiful Cabochons from my Red Jasper chert-nodule.) Your find is valuable enough to deserve to be on display in your home, not kept in a box in a closet.
