Word misspelled on Md. high school's diplomas

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Diplomas at a Maryland high school are being reprinted because they contain a spelling error.
All of the diplomas distributed last week in Prince George's County outside Washington misspelled the word "program." County officials say they noticed the mistake after commencements were under way.

These are the proteges of "no child left behind" doctrines. No doubt that more of these embarrasing mistakes will show what our education system is really capable of in the future. The dumbing down of America is now in fully embeded in our schools. rockhound

The teaching potential is there today, the main problem we have is a lack of basic order and discipline. When students sense a class is out of control they tend not to respect the teacher (usually they hate him or her). This setting is intellectually counterproductive and the students (and teachers) will suffer.

However, some teachers possess the almost incredible ability to remain in control (without force) and therefore maintain a productive learning atmosphere. These rare types have a special gift in that they are able to gain a psychological and manipulative advantage over the class. This is a "gifted" teacher and this type is the gold of any educational institution. With few if any threats and disciplinary action the students respect this type and learn much while under their influence.

In early America (and in most other advanced countries today), this special "gift" was not necessary. The student either respected the teacher or went to the woodshed for a beating. Then when the rebellious student got home he'd receive another beating from his father. The child soon learned that wild/destructive conduct is not acceptable. A humbled student was the result and a humbled student is a learning student.

So why don't teachers discipline today? The answer is, in many school systems they can't. All a student has to do today is gather his or her friends as witnesses and claim a teacher "touched her in the privates" and it will take a miracle of god to deliver that teacher. Even if the teacher survives the legal war he will be constantly harassed all the rest of his career. In many systems teachers are afraid of their students and even more afraid of their parents who are even worse.

Never envy a teacher. Most are brave and dedicated people and deserve every penny they receive.
