Tell the GF that by NO MEANS get rid of the coins at face value at a bank etc; get it appraised somehow, even if its a LCS. Sounds like it could be fairly large if those Barbers are any indication. Good luck.

The ones shown wouldn't grade that high. That 1894 dime might have some value though.....especially if it's an "O" or an "S" (yeah, right, they made 24 of those! :laughing7:) After looking at it again, I guess it's a quarter?

Appraisal is easy, Trust no one to do it for you. Go to PCGS Coin Price Guide, and check the coin price listed to see if you have an outlier. For example, if most of the Washington Quarters are listed in Good 4 at about $4, and you check, and one of yours is listed at $100. That would be an outlier. The rest are either type coins (collected because of their type), or they are silver fillers (good to keep as silver, good to have on hand come the revolution, or for use as a common date). Even if your coin is marked at $8 when the rest are priced at $4, you really don't have much. The key then is finding someone who will BUY the coin and pay enough of a premium to make it worth your time to try to find that buyer. I would say if your coin is 3x the typical price, you have something that warrants additional examination. Once you've pulled the outlier, you need to get HONEST opinions. Come here with those. Do not clean any of them. Do not mess with any of them. Try to touch only the sides of the coins. Try to not touch the face. That will get you through about 98% of your coins. The 2% left are up for grabs.
