Dug these two horseshoes today. The larger was down 8 inches and the smaller about 6 inches. Each was dug at a separate location in the woods near where the civil war battle of big bethel took place.

They look OLD. I beat the rust off with a hammer. Even before I did this, you could see the black stranded metal (iron ?) beneath.

you can see the black stranded metal in the two close-up pics below.

Any idea of how old these would be based on what we can see in the pics? Guestimates?

I read that wrought iron is older, wondering if this is wrought iron?

Wrought iron just means it's hammered by hand, and is still made every day. On the other hand it does typically take a while to rust like that. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who can accurately date a lost horseshoe.

yes, no way to really tell an exact date. all we can say with any confidence is that they are OLD. :dontknow: this is not an exact science. :laughing7:

Congratulations on the 2 horseshoes. No dates or mint marks on those shoes, but still fun to dig.

be really nice if all the things we recover were dated and contained a mint marking. lol. thanks for the comment.
