Dug these two horseshoes today. The larger was down 8 inches and the smaller about 6 inches. Each was dug at a separate location in the woods near where the civil war battle of big bethel took place.
They look OLD. I beat the rust off with a hammer. Even before I did this, you could see the black stranded metal (iron ?) beneath.

Any idea of how old these would be based on what we can see in the pics? Guestimates?
I read that wrought iron is older, wondering if this is wrought iron?
