Sounds like you need to run up the sensitivity or combo ground balance. What controls does it have. I cant believe that unit wont tune up for the sand and salt. ? Did you find an old manual or find any instructions for it.

Contact someone at Minlab USA. The 18000 will do a fair job in the wet sand. But keep it out of the surf as the coil box is not waterproof and the searchcoil is "water-resistant." The 60kHz may be your problem, try
the lower (about 7 kHz) and keep it in groundbalance. Keep the sensitivity about half way and then make adjustments to smooth out the threshold. If all seems well, try the 20kHz setting.
