Yeah that's right I found a colonial coin!!!

Finally got hold of the Farmer to a house I been eyeing up for 5months or so... I talked to him about 5 mins an then told him what I was actually there for... without a thought he said sure go ahead metal detect but lot of people already hit it... So I thought probably a waste of time, but had the words that are always repeated on Tnet.. No place is ever hunted out... with those wise words echoing in my head I headed to the oldest house on the lot.. about 10mins into the hunt I get a singal that is bouncing.. I hear iron an some type of money tone.. so I start to dig an dang it big freakin root.. hacked most of the root out of the way an kept digging must have dug atleast 7-8 inches down then I see a disc on the pile of dirt... cake with dirt..so I take it over to the pond an wipe as much dirt off as possible just to see what is was... couldn't tell right then..stuck it in my pocket an went on detecting.. about 1/2hr later I needed a cigarette so I went to the car an pulled the coin out an looked again... I saw what i call the wheelchair Lady on the on side of the coin..right then I knew I had a good coin..I was so excited!!! so here is the pic of the only thing found today... DonSJ if you could tell me how to clean this I would be forever grateful!! also I have no clue what Variety this coin is an if it's real or counterfeited.... any help would be appreciated ...

I can't tell about the size or thickness of it from the photo posted above. If it's silver dollar sized and thick as hell, it's a cartwheel. Otherwise, I'm sticking with KG.

Well congrats, it looks like a KGI 1723??? just my eyes seeing the 23 :icon_scratch: But I am fairly certain it is a King George I Halfpenny, regardless of not being able to tell the size.

I personally would use peroxide, however, the coin is a bit funky with that corrosion on it, so you might want to just try wet q-tips first, especially around the date area where the definite 17 is showing.

Diameter of my 1723's are approx 27.1mm, a tad over an inch 1.06"

it's very thin... I thought it was a flat button when I first pulled it out of the ground

More towards sharpsburg Civil.. it's not cleaned yet but from what I can tell so far I'm thinking it's going to have 1723.. so my next question is for DonSJ how the heck you see the date with all the crud that was on it?

In which case ignore the 17 on the image above & replace with 23 :D Dump issue coins are fairly rare in the UK, so excellent US find I would say

They are generally more expensive than a normal Geo II & Geo III halfpenny. Not that rare in collecting terms, just quite rare to find (I think anyway).

Dump refers, I think to the thick flange around the coin. Although it may mean something else. Its a name we use a lot but I have never thought why.

Re: Yeah that's right I found a colonial coin!!!

When I look at a posted coin I want to seriously try and ID, I copy it and then look at it in Faststone Image program, and usually after some minor adjustments I then go to the negative mode and that sometimes shows more of the lettering and date than the normal view, in your coin's situation, I thought I saw the 3 for sure, I compared it with two 1723's I have along with my 1717 and it is closer to looking like the 1723, and also the first N in BRITANNIA is closer to the head on my 1723's, like yours is and on my 1717, it is further from the head.
I would not consider it a rare find in USA.

Don
