Had a few hours to go back to the historic York church I've been hunting for a year or so. When I first pulled this out I thought it was just an ordinary dandy button, but quickly realized it was the holy grail of buttons! What we have here is a 1789 George Washington inaugural button! Within four feet I found a second one, but it has quite a bit of crust build up. The pattern on the second button appears to be different. Both have been cleaned only with a toothpick. Any button experts have an id in the second button or advice on further cleaning? There is gilt showing through on the second one. All found with a White's DFX. Also found were several wheats and the Indian found by my wife with the Deus.

The second button may not be a GW. But it is the exact size. The few details I can see don't match any other GW buttons I can find on the net. Others I know have suggested trying CLR on the second button. Never used it. Thoughts?

Is button #2 possibly a rattlesnake button? It looks like a circular snake motif to me?

Amazing finds. Ask a Pro about the second one. Don't risk damaging an important historical button.

Great find!

For the one that needs to be cleaned soaking in lemon juice and some brushing will cut through the crud well and within a fairly short time get you to the point to determine whether it's just civilian or something else. I would guess just a large design button, but who knows for sure until you clean.

Example of how well it can work.

I appreciate all of the comments. Still haven't tried anything to clean the second button. There's too much crud for the usual toothpicking. There's gilt showing through in a few places. Any further suggestions?

I would lemon juice that sucker in a heart beat. It's just acidic enough to cut through the crud but not destroy the surface. Just gently brush it and rinse it to neutralize

Congratulations on an awesome button and making it up on the Banner!:headbang:

Do you have a way to get a precise measurement of the GW in mm, digital calipers would be best?
