Yesterday's outing at an old Pennsylvania homesite
Yesterday I hooked up with my buddy Tom to hunt an old homesite that Tom got permission at through a business associate. Tom has been here one or two times previously, and on his last visit located what we think was the original cabin site from when the place was first settled. Here he found about a dozen buttons that date from approx 1790 to 1810, plus a Liberty Cap Large cent in rough shape. The older spot is about 60 yards below the stone ruins of the later house, which we think dates to the 1820s or 30s. The later house has some very impressive cut foundation stones, and the hearth stone must weigh 4 tons! In one of the pictures I am standing in front of the fireplace so you can get an idea how big this stone is. However, there was not much to be found around these foundations - we each got an indian head penny and Tom eyeballed a nice Bennington marble.
We did better down in the older area. I got 6 buttons (including two large "Dandys"), a thimble and a small buckle. Tom got another Dandy and nice Jew's Harp. All in all, nothing spectacular, and the ground is very harsh on coins and buttons here, but is was nice to get out and dig something!
We will return again in hopes of early silver
