A good friend of mine hunts in Kentucky. In the field they have been finding some real nice old artifacts and a lot of preforms or what we call blanks. Anyway the farmer said he had a whole barn full of them but the barn had collapsed years ago. I was telling my friend how bummed out I was cause of all the high water here in Tennessee and no hunts and said you need to climb under that barn and send me some of those pre forms to study. She just laughed at me. :laughing7:
Well today I received a box that probably weighed 40 pounds.:hello2:
This is what was in it. Yeeee haaa. I love studying this stuff and already see many tools and unifaced knifes and scrapers and choppers.
Thank you friend!

I would never re-work an artifact into a hunting head that I found. I value the artifact as history and will pass the few that I have found on to my grandkids with info as to where I found them. But I have purchased brokes, I call them, from a tourist shop and tried to make hunting heads out of them. The owner claims that he buys the artifacts from Arkansas and sells them for $.50 each.

With all that being written , if I received that box I would get my pressure flaker out, LOL. You have some nice pre-forms there.

Thanks Jon
I actually think many were quick made tools as they have bits and every edge is worked. But yeah it is tempting but I am really bad at knapping. That site they hunt is like that. I have some older sites that produce these as well. They are hard to not pick up. She says she only got a few. I wonder what a lot would be? lol.
I am having fun with them.

Thats allot of stone! I really like that type of artifact for the study and the flaking on them.

You guys correct me if I am wrong. But I swear it looks like these are finished tools and all have secondary flaking or have been reduced down to having bits. What do you think finished?:dontknow: Some are unifaced.

TN these are the type finds that I love. It takes multiple finds and observation to figure them out. I have a few!

Sorry if I danced all over your post. It makes me happy to see you so happy over pieces like the ones that I have started feeling shy about posting. Some may be preforms. I think they were used until the time came to work them down, just as they are. Many I also think are choppers and adze type tools. Some are Celt like tools and a few agricultural. I pay attention to where I find mine. That helps me with my own logical answer. Nice gift you got today TN!!

No I am happy to see them N.C. We used to not pick them up 30 years ago but they were an important part of the game. Value wise no but knowledge wise I think lots. I was happy to get these to look at. I have plenty from here now I have LOTS!
I got to get them off my dining room table.

Some modern day flint knappers are just as good as the original guys. It would be tempting to create a beautiful spearpoint and sell it for some easy cash. I'm not saying they do that....just that it is possible.

Great find.

They do that! I'll show you the burn if you'd like. Only and last thing I'll ever put cash on. You didn't master mind that one.

 Is that a square knife? the rectangle one? I'd leave them on the table for a few more days....we find plenty with secondary flaking, and that puts them right up with the points.

A large majority of stone artifacts that are for sale on e-bay / flea markets, are modern made.
Buyer beware!
