virgin mary medallion beach find

found something other than clad and beer caps on the beach yesterday.nice virgin mary religious medallion.it has the date 1890 at the foot of the virgin mary,but i don't think it's the date it was made,it must mean something else.i'm thinking it may be copper.it's copper in color and there are no silver stamps.it regestered as a quarter when i dug it.allways fun to find something new.

Nice find, the date is usually 1830, the date represents the year the Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine Laboure in an apparition. She revealed the design of the "Miraculous Medal" and instructed her to have it made. If it is in fact dated 1890, it is a Jubilee or anniversary edition of the same medal which is also common.
