Vending Machines

I have a question that may or may not have been covered in the past but I haven't run across it if it has. Do vending machines cull silver? I don't want to risk a silver quarter by dropping it in the coin slot to see if it will keep it or reject it. Does anyone know? Maybe it would depend on the age of the machine.

The reason this came to me was the other day I was picking up coins at one of my pickup banks. There is also a local guy who runs a food business and is responsible for hundreds of vending machines throughout our city. When I was getting in my truck, I see him unloading bag after bag of coin onto a handcart to take into the bank. That got me thinking if there would be a possibility of silver since my guess is most of these coins came from various vending, snack, and drink machines.

I don't know if he or his workers cull any silver or not but it made me wonder if I should approach him about buying bags directly from him for searching or if it would be a waste of time. Whats ya'lls opinion?

At my old job, there was a vending machine that would reject silver coins....a guy was complaining that his dime kept falling right through, so I traded him a clad dime for his silver dime. He got a bag of Doritos, and I got some silver. We were both winners! Hahaha.

My girlfriends father runs a large vending business he started and all his machines accept silver coinage. I would know, because he lets me go through them before he takes 'em to the bank.

But, i'm going to say it depends on the age/model/hi-techiness of the machine. Haha.

For sure, without a doubt, the machines will accept silver nickels.

As for dimes and quarters, it depends on the machine. Newer machines will likely reject silver.

I would say your best bet would be to try $1000 worth of dimes. If you are skunked, try it one more time. If you are skunked over $2k in dimes, then the machine rejects. If you find Ag in the dimes, then try quarters.

Anyway around though, if you have the patience to do nickels, do the nickels. You will find 35% Ag war nickels, I guarantee it.

Granted I don't get that much silver but that is only because silver quarters in circulation is nearly non-existent. It really just depends on the model of the machines and what it is that triggers the mechanism.

Fun fact though on vending machines, put in a coin, press reject and a different coin will come out!

I've spoken with a few people that run laundromats that also cull. I have however found 1 that doesn't and I love using the coin machine after him!

A friend owns coin-op laundry machines, and they accept silver. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the means to cull it before it gets sent to the bank due to volume of coin. He has told me that he can hear it was it gets dumped from the hopper into the counter to be bagged. The counter is pretty high end, so if you stopped it as soon as you heard the silver ping, it would stil probably be buried in a sea of clad.
