xp-225 coil

what's the performance / difference in the 9" xp-225 coil vs. the larger and newer X-35 versions? I'm looking at buying a used XP and it comes with the 9" 225 coil (any good?)

while a great deal I hate to invest in old technology that I have to turn around and replace (at significant cost)

The older LF coil is limited in frequency range and ability to control transmit power vs. the X35 coil. LF coil (never heard the term XP 225 before) are now discontinued by XP and is limited to 4 to 18 kHz operation and fixed transmit power at 4 kHz (no frequency shift) and when frequency shifting around the the “shiftable” base frequencies (i.e., 8 kHz, 12 kHz, and 18 kHz). The X35 coil on the other hand can operate at 5 different base frequencies (4, 8, 12, 28, and 25 kHz) which can be frequency shifted above and below each base frequency with variable transmit power, has better EMI resistance, and a newer longer lived internal battery.

The wider frequency ranges and greater Tx power adjustability mean potentially better depth overall (lower frequency), better detectability for small mid-conductors like gold and brass (highest frequency setting) or better performance in mineralized soils since you can lower transmit power. You also need to find out how long the old coil has been in service to determine if you are facing imminent coil battery replacement (4 or 5 years old or older).

If you are a coin shooter you will definitely want the X35 coil. Operating the Deus at 25 kHz with ID Norm set to off “pushes” many coin TIDs into the 90’s. This is extremely useful when cherry picking sites that are loaded with modern trash. Also, 25 kHz seems to really lock onto nickels.
