Yes the star is the other shape I was thinking about. I don't recall seeing a shield--must be a rare one. I have only seen the smaller ones being posted and the one I found with a heart here in northern NJ in the suburbs obviously had nothing to do with the Civil War. I liked the "ladies of the night" theory as it added some "color" to the heart plates. They all look feminine to me so men wearing them on their boots with cute little patterns that they'd leave in the soil sounds a bit counter-intuitive to me. Who says women coming into the camps especially the ones requiring payment didn't lose them in the camps?? Can you please post some examples of heel plates in both the small and large size? The dug boot I saw posted here was a woman's boot.

Very cool, love these :icon_thumright:

Not sure either as I've dug a heart style heel plate from a 1880/90 homestead that was in like new condition as it had the fine pattern design on the plate so it had little or no wearing. Dug a heel plate from the 1840- and this one had square holes for the nails instead of the round hole as the heart heel plates had.

I just found one exactly like yours on the third row down and second from the right. Any info on it? Thanks

Found civil war camp site in Louisiana

Really nice heal plate, perfect condition.

I agree, doesn't look military issue to me either.
They did use these boot plates on some boots worn during the Civil War - that being said
not every boot plate with a heart on it is CW - we find these in farm fields and around cellar holes
all over New England - I have some with spade and club cut outs as well as a few others -
my friend found a heart one about the size of a quarter - either a childs boot/shoe or small woman

my son found the match to it yesterday . nice find
