Looks non-ferrous (and that would rule out a pistol)

It is brass or bronze. I dug a boot pistol last year that was bronze. thanks for the reply.

Look at the wall thickness on your boot pistol, and compare it to your pipe fitting. Not likely a pistol.

(not to mention the threads at what is presumed to be the business end.)

Looks more like a pipe fitting of some sort. The bore size is too large to be a pistol - especially being so short. Could you imagine shooting a load like that?!?

Threads on the business end of a gun barrel would mean only two things,a choke or a silencer.

I think you've figured it out.

It belonged to double-o-one.

The bore measures approx. 3/8. Thanks again!

Definitely not a gun barrel of any kind. My first thought just looking at it is maybe a mig welder tip?

Not a mig tip, but like I said wasn't sure and the replies are great help. The site is very old, found on a 1862 map. 200 yards in a field and land owner didn't know there had ever been a house there, he is 70. just another interesting artifact LOL. Great help, thanks.

Most modern gun barrels have external threads, is there any rifling or "raised" grooves internally? That raised sight looking thing may be a crude rear sight, maybe if it or was a barrel it was cut down?

It is smooth other than the internal threads which are about 1/2" in. Thanks.

I still would not throw it in the junk bucket yet....I believe some of the real old black powder barrels were made out of brass or bronze
