I got back out this morning to a place that has been giving up some old coins. I was working an area probably 20x20 where I found an 1888 Indian head and a 1864 2 cent piece earlier in the week. I got a one way 22-25 vid on the equinox 800 and I decided to dig and I'm glad I did. Out popped an 1870 Indian head penny.

Let me know what you guys think the condition and the grade might be just curious.

Thanks Kris

wow, that is nice, xtra fine details

I usually get much more corrosion on the ones I find. Yours is a beauty.

Agree XF or AU details environmental damage, this looks like the bold N variety to me?

How did you clean it

Thank you. I just soaked it in olive oil and wiped it real light with a Q-tip.

Nice find and it cleaned up to attractive appearance. I would expect a grading service to say something like XF-40 or XF-45 detail "cleaned, pitted" - as they indicate with dug coins. But really, this one is attractive. I dug an 1870 in lower grade, F to VF and felt pretty good about it until my hunting partner went into thick brush where I didn't go - and was rewarded with an 1877 in about the same grade as your 1870.

Wow lol.. I hope to get me a 1877 someday.

Beautiful finds - congrats on an incredible hunt! :occasion14:

That sure cleaned up nice. Neat find.

XF45 with environmental damage but for a dug coin it is absolutely PERFECT to me. Congratulations on that beautiful key-date IHP

Fantastic, I would be thrilled with that one.

Stunning! Congrats Kris!

Wow,what a beautiful IH

Great find! I cannot offer an opinion on grade but I can say that it is mighty rare ANY coin comes out of the ground like that around here. Congratulations.

Wow, that's probably the best indian cent I've ever seen condition-wise

Where do I buy some of that olive oil? Did you get it from Mt. Olympus or what???

Awesome coin. Great cleanup job!

Good question! My coppers don't clean up that nicely with olive oil.
