Went for a short walk on a beautiful January day. My wife found this amazing little drill. We've never seen anything like it. It's broke but it's still awesome. Thanks for looking.

From the photos it looks like the maker had to work around some inclusions to complete that one, thus the snake shape? Nice color.

Drill/awl leather punch. Cool piece. Beautiful lithic.
Family heirlooms are made this way. The story and the artifact will stay the same, the memories of it all will become epic.

Looks like Kaolin chert.

It could be Kaolin. We don't see much Kaolin here in Cent. Il though. Could also be high grade yellow Burlington from the IL River area. It's much closer than where the Kaolin is from. Kaolin has many colors when heated. Here's a sample of all heated Kaolin from Union Co. IL. Gary

?? FWIW, from what I read on the internet, Kaolin comes from a small area in southwestern Illinois and didn't travel far or often for some reason.

I said the drill we're looking at looks like it based on a Redstone point that Brian Wiliard (who gave it to me) ID'd as Kaolin via its OSL (laser) signature. The two look very similar.

The heated artifacts you show are very different in color, apparently, from the raw stuff, some of which could be mistaken for butterscotch Paoli chert.
