Hi, i went to the bank and got 10 dollars in pennies and after going through them all, all i found was five wheats and a candian, which turns out to be .05 % of the rolls were wheats.

wow thats pretty low...still nice finds on the wheaties! Try nickels, they have more of a success rate, usually one old nickel per roll or one every other roll

I agree about the nickels. I usually find 1 silver war nickel per $100 and about 50-100 from the 30-50s and too many 60s to count that I don't even bother with them anymore.

Probably something on the order of .000000001%, aka slim to none. At least that's been my experience.

Quarters around my area have been losers...Dimes seem to have the most silver per dollar amount...but halves seem to be the best if you can get them. Takes a lot of silver dimes to make a 90% half! Found three Franklins and a 90% Kennedy yesterday out of $240. My wife goes through about $300 in quarters per day at the Jr. High student store she is in charge of and has brought me 2 90% Washington quarters since the beginning of the year...so they are out there...

5 in 1000 is 0.5%, not 0.05%. That's still not terribly bad considering Wheats have not been minted since 1958.

I made a spreadsheet that keeps track of all of my finds and the percentages. So far this year here are my results:

Wheats: .333%
Foreign Pennies: .35%

Silver Nickels: .05%
Foreign Nickels: .12%
Buffalo Nickels: .015%
Proof Nickels: .005%

Silver Dimes: .041%
Mercury Dimes: .005%
Foreign Dimes: .011%

As for the halves and quarters, I've been too lazy to type the equation in my spreadsheet because I didn't get results for either until this past week (2 foreign quarters, 2 silver halves, one proof half)

Anyone else keep any info?

I've searched $9,650 so far this year, and I didn't start until the 9th of January this year. So yeah, this all proves that I have too much free time!

I used to keep detailed info on my nickel finds when I was amassing solid date rolls, including the date each coin was found. I could look at the data and see that the last 1948S I found was on July such 'n' such. Most of that project is completed so I'm not a sickler for details too much anymore. I do note the date of each wartime silver I find. My best year was 60, or roughly one every six days. Now if I accumulate a roll's worth a year I'm happy.

My last detailed study was halves last year. I bought $100 worth 50 seperate times and logged the results. I considered it fortunate to find one 40%-er per $100 since it averaged out to less than that. During the "study" I found only one 1964, one Franklin (1952) and one Walker (1942, I was happy for a week!).

I once did a massive study of Lincolns in 1996. I brought home $10 in pennies 100 times and noted everything I found, including frequency of dates. I'll post some of the results later today (I don't have the data with me at the moment). It's pretty interesting some ten years later.

Not only did I look for wheats, but I noted how often each Memorial date showed. I never did complete a whole Memorial set from just $10 (came within three dates a couple of times).

From 1/14/96-10/5/96 here's what I found from searching 100,000 pennies -

396 wheats (averaging about 4 per $10)

- 235 from 1950-58 (most common 1958D - 39)
- 132 from 1940-49 (most common 1945 - 15)
- 13 from 1930-39 (most common 1936 - 3)
- 6 from 1920-29
- 9 pre-1920
- 1 dateless

- Found all from 1941-1958 except: 1943PDS, 1952, 1954
- Pre-1941: 1940PS, 1939PS, 1938PD, 1937, 1936, 1935PD, 1930PS, 1928, 1926, 1925, 1921, 1920, 1919PS, 1917PS, 1916, 1914

218 Canadian (averaging two per $10)

- All dates from 1962-present (most common 1981 - 15)
- Pre-1962: 1957, 1956, 1951, 1940

Foreign

- Panama 1 centesimi - 1968, 1975, 1978, 1987
- Jamaica 5 cents 1969

Miscellaneous

- 1898 Indian (woo hoo!)
- 1990S impaired proof
- a cent-sized Denver Mint insert coin

Odd Facts

- 1958D was more common than 1959, 1960, 1962 or 1963
- 1956D was more common than 1960 or 1962
- Wheats: 50% of all dates found; 25% of pre-1940
- Found two 1917S's but no 1952 or 1954
- Least common Memorial 1960 & 1962 - 31% of the time
- Canadian: 84% of Queen Elizabeth series found

Interesting to note that only three times did I find no wheats out of a $10 batch. The most was 10.

I just went thru $10 worth a few days ago and it was so much work I don't know how I did it 100x back then!

Hey, sorry about the fraction thingy, math isn't my strong piont.

It is a proven fact that 5 out of 4 people are not good at fractions lol

WOW!! Recording all of those dates on the pennies must have been a chore! I can't imagine doing that much work.

Actually that's not too bad. Six finds in only ten dollars.
Last weekend was particularly bad for me with pennies though...I bought 100 dollars in pennies to go through over the weekend while the banks were closed. I came out with 13 wheats and 6 canadians.
Usually if I get pennies I get a box $25 and I'll get maybe 5-10 finds. Maybe it's just my area...who knows...
