went to a house built in the 20's last night, hunted for about 2 hours and found 2 wheaties 50' and 49'. The yard was amazingly clean, dug 1 old nut and the rest was penny's and nickles all dating in the 60's and early 70's, the owner (my uncle) says he will occasionally find old marbles and arrow heads, they live not far from the river in elkhart off of plum st. So expectations are high for me, can't wait to detect the rest of the yard, only did the side part of the yard. HH

Hey Smash,

Glad to see you're getting some older finds under your belt.

You might want to consider hunting the front yard along the sidewalk area leading to the front door and along the public walk as well. I would also check the back yard and see if you can locate where the clothes line would have been and detect along where the line was hung.

Hope everything is well with your dad and wish a speedy recovery to him.

thanks DJH, I detected along the front side yard and did find a target about 1" off the sidewalk about 4" down, dug it up and seen the buffalo, wipped it off and turned it over to see the date. It was the @#$%^^& new nickle :-[

Well, it is your first Buffalo nickle :headbang:

Even if it's not the exact type you're looking for. Finding nickles are good :icon_thumright: as the rings normally fall into that range on the detectors.

Them newer stinkin state coins drive me crazy, dig em, look down and see old dates like "1917" or the buffalo, etc. I thought I found some goofy mexican coin from 1917 at the playground in niles on sunday, ....about ran over to show it off, til I cleaned it a little more to reveal "new" next to mexico over 1917 and 2001 on the flipside.

:laughing7: I seen you stop mid-stride and go back to detecting. I remember seeing someone's post a couple of years ago about the oldest coin they had found. Ended up being a state quarter. Either the finder wasn't all that smart, or they were just pranking the forums.

Now I'm spoiled and am on the look out for a good deal on a long handle scoop. This is all your fault, you know that, right?
