I have (and love) a DFX. I have the stock 9.5" coil and an Eclipse 1400 DD coil. I've read nothing but great things about the newer 10" DD coil. Does it offer enough advantages to spend the money on one? I'm just wondering what advantages it might have over the two coils I have now.

Thanks for any insights,

You'd do better to get a smaller coil, if you feel you need a new coil. The two you have cover everything the D2 can do.

You might want to hear from someone that uses it on the DFX, but on the MXT it hits way deeper targets over the 950 and separates much better being a DD coil. I can get silver dimes at 10"+ and some being at 12" before, for me its as deep as the super 12 coil with great separation for a big coil. I don't have or ever used the 1400 coil, it does pick up EMI alot worse than any other coil I have, most likely from it being so sensitive. I have the D2,950,6x10,4x6, and the detech 13" ultimate coil, I have 2 of the D2 coils because if one goes bad I don't want to be without one as I use that coil 95% of the time. HH

He did hear from someone that uses it on the DFX...

The D2 will get better depth in highly mineralized soil than the 950. In average ground, it's a zero gain proposition. The D2 won't go as deep as the 1400, though it is less susceptible to EMI and can handle higher preamp gain settings than the DD1400.
So, if you are wanting to get a new coil to round out your arsenal, I recommend looking at the 4x6 Eclipse. Otherwise, you are in good shape as far as deep coils go.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I know I'm lacking a small coil but so far, I haven't felt the need for one. I never cease to be impressed with the performance of the DFX with the stock 9.5" concentric coil. The only times I've ever felt I needed a different coil is when hunting an area I know that has very highly mineralized soil. That was my inspiration (possibly misguided?) for the purchase of the Eclipse 1400 DD. And it turns out the thing is so heavy I hate to swing it, and so sensitive to EMI I always end up running a lower-than-usual PAG and ACS.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out,

Don't know if it's been mentioned already but the 8x6 Excellerator coil is a blessing on the DFX. The D2 coil was chosen by a vet dectorist to replace the 12x10 though, but he already owned the 8x6. He said that the D2 was a special weight balance and the D2 does as great job in seperation. I'd focus on either of those two coils. martin

with the d2 I dig a lot more bottle caps than with the 9.5, I thought I had my yard hunted out till I got the 4x6 shooter, my favorite coil for the dfx. I use d2 for fields and woods and the 4x6 for everything else.

It's a whole other kettle of fish if you hate to swing the 1400. If you don't like it, you won't use it. Sell it off, shelve the 950, carry the D2 and the 4x6. Pretty much all the coils you need. My earlier recommendation was based on what you already have with the assumption that you use them.
Even though the 10" D2 looks round like a concentric coil, it is actually two elliptical coils back to back.
If your soil is not heavily mineralized, the 950 will actually have more maximum depth than the D2. However, its magnetic pattern is more like a cone, so the deepest point of the field is actually much smaller in diameter than the coil, which is why you have to overlap your sweeps. The field on any elliptical is more like a narrow blade running front to back, so you don't have to overlap your sweeps. Elliptical coils are also less affected by mineralization than concentric coils, so the D2 will achieve greater depth than the 950 in that environment. By the same token, the Eclipse 5.3 concentric coil will go deeper than the 4x6 elliptical, but the 4x6 will separate targets much, much better. But, as noted, the smaller coils are only for when you get into trashy environments. Otherwise, you won't need one.

Thanks again for all the insights, gentlemen. I appreciate it.

Good hunting,
