Went coin roll hunting yesterday, I got skunked on all the loose halfs and a couple CWR of dimes. Then a teller comes to me and asks if I wanted this and holds up a 1953 10 dollar silver certificate for face!!!!!.:hello2: I said sure.I wonder if I can take it to the reserve and get $10.00 in silver just like it says on the ten dollar note or is it a gov trick just like everything else :laughing7:

Used to work like that. The Govt quit redeeming silver certs in the late 60s or early 70s I think. Cool find though!

Great find!

you used to be able to! not since they stopped using silver as a currency basis. Boy, that's be a good deal now, that $10 bill would be worth $240 or so. That's an easy way to view inflation

Last year was 1968 :(
I got two 20 dollar gold certificates from 1928 from a teller at face a few months ago. I would love to go back in time to redeem...

Yep, just goes to show you what the "real money" is today. Though finding older paper money is harder than finding older coins because the mint/fed/Brinks do not cull older coins while the Fed does cull older bills. The motto "Never keep a paper dollar in your pocket 'till tomorrow" certainly rings true (see http://www.coinsite.com/content/coinpics/HK-830.asp for it on a token). In great condition a 1928 $20 gold certificate can sell for $200-300 but even the most lousy double eagle will sell for $1600+ depending on the spot price of gold. Simply amazing the wholesale theft of wealth that took place just a couple of generations ago.

nice bill!!! post pic!!:headbang:

If there limp and torn go to your local bank for 10 Federal Reserve Notes, some are worth quite a bit but most are worth very little over face.

You can use it to buy a few dimes. I picked up 20 90% halfs today for $10 each.

I cant find the cord to upload pics from my camera. It does have a fold in the middle like it was in a wallet. Its not torn and in really good condition for the age. I talked to a guy about trading junk silver for it I keep you posted.
