Hello Friends,

I'm new to this forum, but not to metal detecting. Been hunting for about 20 years now. Since purchasing a Minelab Explorer SE in Jan., my '07 silver/oldies coin counts have skyrocketed. I've already found 150 silver coins this year, plus a whopping 652 wheaties from 16 local parks and 1 middle school. Geez, it's only the end of March. :o

Today was my best 1 day hunt ever. The "silver magnet" (Expl. SE) performed flawlessly today!! Got a new "personal best" from a county park in the Los Angeles area. 12 silver coins today, with one hole containing a merc and a rosie. I just didn't think it could be possible to find that much silver at a park around here in one day. I'm still wondering why so many good finds were still left at this park, being one of the oldest in the city (1911). Could it be all the iron in the ground masking the good targets? I was digging quite a few rusty nails and bolts that sounded like good targets, and rarely had a threshold tone that lasted more than a few seconds. Most of my coins came from an area between and around two large palm trees in the park. I have done so well detecting around these trees at every park I've been to. The better thing is that I've only hunted less than a third of this park. It should produce more. We'll see ;) So far from 5 hunts this week at the park, I've found a total of 36 silver coins.

The pic is from two days of hunting at the park. I found 7 silvers a couple of days ago there. Got the SS ring, SS cross, and gold religious pendant today also.

Two Day totals:

1 '48 Washington
11 Rosies ('46, '48, '50, '51, '52(2), '56, '58(2), '59, '64)
6 Mercs ('20, '40, '42(2), '43(2))
1 '45S War Nickel
27 wheaties
2 Canadian Pennies ('28, '47)

Happy Hunting Everyone,
CAPTN "SE"
Dan

Not digging nails may be costing you a few silver coins, your settings might ignore those older "thin" dimes?? I dig nails, but sometimes I'm surprised with a deep silver coin, usually Barber or Seated. Just my opinion!!
Not to worry captn, discriminating nails will not cause you to miss any silver.I use one of the least expensive least sophisticated machines and I always discriminate as high as possible without tuning out nickles and gold rings or coins and I've dug some really thin silver coins in deep.I can turn my disc. all the way up and I'll tune out nickles and gold and even newer zinc pennies but copper and silver still screech out good repeatable signals.Of course I'm just using a cheapie but if I had to dig nails to make sure I wasn't missing silver then I think I'll stick with my cheapie!! Great finds though and that's really quite a silver count for a year that's still young.Welcome to the forum!! Bootstrap

I've included some pics of the tiny, thin, silver coins I've found and I always tune out nails and rusty bottle caps. The quarter is only for size reference.

Don't waste your money on an explorer. That way you will save some silver for future generations. ;) :)

BTW - how deep were most of the coins? Have you hunted the parks before? Looks like a fairly "untouched" place. But still total sweetness! ;D ;D Good job.
