14K White Gold, Silver, Copper, and CZ's!! Low Tide Hunt...
Hello Everyone,
Since I ended my day early yesterday after finding the Franklin Half dollar, I was still pumped to do a little more detecting. I decided to head over to my local swimming hole at low tide for about an hour. I was detecting the water's edge of the swimming area and started to get a few clad coins. My first deep signal was a pure copper dog tag, but I'm not sure what it is from. You can see an etching on it, and was pointed out by one of our fellow Tnetters(DD-777, Thanks
) to be the letters, "LB". Probably for Long Beach, where I found it.
After pulling my first wheatie in the sandy, clay ground, I got a faint signal. About 10" and three scoops later, I see a small black colored cross with stones on it. It looks old. When I got home, I cleaned it up, and it shined silver. The stones look to be turquoise.
My best find of the day didn't happen with my detector. My eyes spotted a shimmering reflection in about 2" of water along the shoreline. I bent down and saw about 3" of a small silvery chain. I started to remove the chain, and it kept coming, but then got a little hard to pull. I removed some sand around the stuck chain, and a pendant with 3 diamonds was attached to it. I was looking for a marking, and saw "14K Italy", and knew I had a white gold necklace. After looking at the diamonds, I thought there was a high probability they would be real. I drove home, pulled my diamond tester out, and to my surprise, the diamonds are just CZ's.
Oh well, but it sure was exciting. The chain measures 20" and is missing a few links where it broke when it was lost. It's total weight is 3.5 grams, and does not even break the threshold on my SE. I would have gone right over it with my detector if I hadn't seen it.
So I ended up with gold, silver, copper, and CZ diamonds; and about $2.50 in clad. Not a bad one hour hunt.
So the answer is, "Yes", I can find something other than silver.
But I needed my eyes to help me this time.
Thanks for looking!
