✅ SOLVED 15.5mm diameter, cross type design

This was found in the CA gold rush area, northern mother lode. It is not a button as far as I can tell, no back markings. It is very thin. It has a bit of a tab on one side and opposite side across from the tab it appears that there was a tab there, slightly recessed.
The design looks French or Spanish to me?
