Good hunt on the river this evening . Got back to where I found some seated a few weeks ago. First good find was the early style button followed by what your going to have to take my word is a 169? William III farthing. It looked better when first recovered. Also dug some musketballs, 1880 IHP, another toasted copper(colonial too I think). Silver for the night was an 1853 Seated Dime:hello2:

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Nice variety of finds.

That is so awesome congrats. I'm really looking forward to the day I find a 1600's copper! Overall looks like a good day! Is it saltwater or freshwater?

never mind I see it was a river! I will use this moment to congratulate you again!

Nice finds Toasted,
Are you reaching your sites by kayak? I use mine occasionally for access to remote fossil grounds but so far, not for metal detecting sites because, while I don't mind getting wet, I don't want to ruin a detector. Have you found a waterproof float bag to hold a detector ?

Brackish river

I use my kayak and my Boston Whaler. Im using an Equinox so not worried about it getting wet

Can you fit the Nox in a hatch or do you strap it to the deck? Looks like a nice day to kayak. I tend to stay too long and then come back in a squall.

Ive got a small little kayak but it has a fairly large cockpit so I can fit detector(broken down) and scoop inside with me. The spots Ive been detecting are fairly close to my launching point. Longer trips I use my powerboat

Thanks Toasted,
A powerboat and kayak(s) are the perfect combination. I had to sell my perfect river boat - my Scout 185 because we moved away from a polluting LNG refinery across the Bay from you and the boat trailer could not be backed into my new driveway on a small road. Still searching for the perfect shallow draft boat to beach on sand, gravel or mud that can be pushed off by one person and also backed into my driveway.

I think a square stern canoe like a Gheenoe would be a perfect compromise between the two and plan on getting one at some point. You really need to get in close to the shorelines to eyeball potential good spots to detect and you cant do that with a bigger boat and a kayak is too slow

Thanks for those suggestions. Yes, just as with metal detectors, the hunt for one that works for most conditions we encounter goes on forever it seems. I'm familiar with the Gheenoe as friends have owned one - and then moved up, and square stern canoes in general. I started with old Grumman canoes over 50 years ago until I discovered kayaks. I have several beaches that are hard to reach in the Bay by land and the chop can come up quickly as you know. So I was thinking of something with a full height transom and smaller 4 stroke (under 40 or 50) that could be driven ashore without filling with water from the chop while i hunted. Of course, a kayak is great because we can just pull it above the surf altogether. But I also know how quickly conditions change.

Nice going! I used to live near the Severn River in Annapolis. Your picture reminds me of that. Beautiful place.
