Back in the woods today and dug up three 1700's relics. First was a slightly bent oval shoe buckle frame. No tongue and chape, but still a great find. I did nick it a little bit with my digger, but nothing too serious.
Next find was a huge dandy button! Biggest one ever, measuring a whopping 1 3/8" (35 mm). It had a layer of burnt crud on it, so I had to soak it in mineral oil for a few hours. Eventually got most of it off with a toothpick. Very nice button!
My last find was a tongue and chape. Too big for the shoe buckle frame I found today, though. I did find a small fragment of a shoe buckle last week, so it might go to that one. Based on the design, the chape is probably 1720 to 1770 era. Not a bad day at all!
