Was going through some things today and came across some relics that I found a while back at a late 1700s homesite. The penny is there for size reference. I started with a toothpick and started seeing gilt I guess. It's really hard to get the crud off. The back has what looks like could have been a clasp of some sort. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be? It's really thin.

I agree. With the brooch. You can see how the pin was on one side and on the other where it hooked in. Look at te back of the brooch I found as example

Yes almost certainly a brooch - Might well have had a cameo carving of a Lady on the front at one time - I'm thinking
Victorian - circa 1850's 90's would be my guess . Nice finds .

It will clean with short 10 minute soaks in pure lemon juice, the non-gilt bits may turn a little reddish but the gold will come up real nice. As a victorian brooch partifact its not one your going to harm the value of.

My money is also on brooch, and pretty certain it was a cameo!

Wow Crusader, the lemon juice treatment sure worked!

That sure did clean up nicely - I'd be tempted to find a cameo that fits, take it all to a jeweler and have a bezel and new pin findings put
on that rascal , and give it to a pretty lady !

yeah I knew it would, many get scared by lemon juice but done in short sessions & a good rinse its natures natural cleaner/chemical

We'll, I'm a believer now. Thanks for the advice.
