1700's Wax Seal Stamp

I went back to the soccer field where I dug all the coppers a few weeks back. I had hit it hard over the last few outings, but I missed a few goodies. This time I dug a bunch of tombac buttons, a "V" nickel which is the only modern coin I have dug, and finally the wax seal, which was a nice surprise.

I was surprised that wood was used for the seal. I would have thought ivory or bone would have been better suited for the job. It's too bad it broke off. I would love to have known what the seal was. The wood seems to be in amazing shape. I guess the brass protected it over the last 200 years!

Don't think I haven't been considering it! I am not sure if it is better than the V3i but it's half the price!

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

That soccer field sure has produced some nice coins and relics. Strange that that wax seal didn't have a stone or glass set in it.

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

cool looking Seal. Congrats!

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

that's crazy that it still has wood in it... you would think it would have rotted or bugs would have gotten it. probably better to seal it with something or it will most likely turn to dust.

Someone else suggested that I left the metal seal in the hole, and I am inclined to think it may be true. I better check my pouch and my Jeep.

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

Did you root around in the area to see if the seal was there? The wood looks rather fresh. Well done!!! :icon_thumleft:

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

Nice!! :headbang: Sweet find

Re: Colonial Era Wax Seal Stamp

Nice piece Neil, you're right, it would've been nice to know what the seal was however you got the main portion of it so not a total loss. Nice find buddy :icon_thumleft:

Agreed, no idea why they replaced the stone or glass with wood, other than they lost the stone & wanted to stick anything easy in its place. This type was still in use in the early 1800s & many were just fashion & may not have had any complicated design on the stone other than hatchwork or plain.
