1715 FL;EET -- UBILLA'S PATACHE BOUGHT IN CUBA * the mari a galante -english prize

many people think that Ubilla bought a local Cuban built vessel --not so he in fact bought a vessel take as a "prize vessel' off of Echeverz in cuba --that Echeverz took for illegal trading while in South America ... the former English owned galante class vessel named Mari (welsh for "mary" with a I instead of Y) --- called by the Spanish the "mari galante " since the Spanish go name of vessel then type of vessel -- like thus ---- Arizona battleship ---whereas we English speakers would say the " battleship Arizona"

Echeverz tok a total of 3 prize vessels off of south America --one French (the El Ciervo) , one dutch ( the Olandisa / senor de la popa / San Miguel ) and the English prize --(the Mari - partly owned by the English govenor of Jamaica --Hamilton ) -- the patache had a official listed treasure of 44,000 silver pieces of 8 onboard

That's how I interpret things too, though I'm not sure we know it as fact that Ubilla's ship was bought from Echeverz. It makes sense. Echeverz had too many ships & not enough crew, & Ubilla kept losing ships but had plenty of crew, so it was a win-win.

Mind boggling that with Ubilla's nautical record & the fact that the King was "losing faith" in Ubilla he was still in charge of the entire flotilla. No wonder they wrecked with him in charge.

well its known that ECHEVERZ HAD TAKEN 3 PRIZE VESSELS WHILE "DOWN IN SOUTH AMERICA " ==ONE FRENCH , ONE DUTCH AND ONE "ENGLISH"--- when Echeverz left Havana , Cuba (after a long and costly delay awaiting Ubilla coming from Mexico with his vessels ) he was "ship rich and cash poor " and needed to raise funds to supply his vessels with food for the return trip ..Unilla was in bad need of a small "patache / messenger type" vessel for his fleet (having lost all 4 of his fleets small vessels while at anchor in Mexico due to a bad storm that wrecked the at anchor vessels in the harbor ) -- the smallest of the 3 "prize vessels" of Echeverz was the "English prize" Mari ...a galara type vessel that was 25% owned by the English gov. of Jamaica --Hamilton--- only 2 prize vessels the Dutch and French are listed as being in Echeverz 's fleet upon his departing Cuba --with the loss of a vessel from Echeverz's fleet and one being gained by Ubilla's fleet --its fairly logical and clear what occurred
