1783 "NEW YORK PENNY" DUTCH DUIT

Not my find: I got out with my buddy Dave on the beach, and the signals were sparse, but he managed an unusual find...a Dutch Duit coin! Fairly common coin, but I don't recall seeing a dug one recently.
He does not post in the forums, so I am gonna post it for him.

congrats to your friend!
those puppies are few and far between.
i got one last year here in upstate ny,
a 1667 or '87, also from Utrecht.
smaller than a dime.
don't remember seeing any others from
this part of the world.

Dave, the irony is that copper coins look better when in the salt sand for 200 years than they do from woods and fields. Silver, on the other hand, comes off the beach usually looking black as coal. So we have the opposite affect on both.

i've dug a few copper coins that were just pitted discs and thin from all the wave and tumbling action. if just sitting in dry sand and not getting tumbled then yes i would have to agree with you.still a beautiful coin!

Believe me, this was not just sitting in dry sand...Only a few inches down and below the high tide line I am sure this one has moved around quite a bit over the last 200 years, especially a thin copper coin about the same weight as a zinc Lincoln cent!

I wonder the same thing, Herb. They are a very common coin, showing up on eBay often, but I only recall a few ever being posted. I wonder if they circulated as widely as believed.
