I got out last week with a old friend I had not detected with in quite some time. Due to a recent robbery of my car I had to borrow my fathers XLT. The first field we hit did not produce much more than a few musket balls. So we decided to hit the remnants of a 1 room school house. This school was in operation from 1859-1910. My grandmother attended this school from 1905-1910 when they moved to a 4 room school house up the road.

We had been there about an hour when Rob told me he just found 3 Indian heads in 1 hole....I was excited for him but it was getting close to the time I had to pick up my kids at school so at the same time I was feeling rather anxious to find something myself. I decided to move out front near the road....After relocating to the front I hit a choppy signal in the 32 VDI range. Now this is an older site so I usually dig everything with a repeating signal. After a minute or so I had in my hand a old cameo brooch. It was missing most the cameo but the gold plating was still mostly intact. By this time Rob had worked out towards me and we said we had better get motoring.

Just as he said that I had a solid repeating 84 VDI. After pinpointing it rang up at 8" deep. Now I did not have much hope for this signal as it was so close to the road but I dug it anyway. After flipping the plug I decided to recheck the signal....
It was gone! I scanned both the hole and the plug then rescanned again. NOTHING. .....Now I figured my batteries were low and my machine was playing tricks on me. I filled the hole back in and for giggles hit it again. Once again I was greeted by a solid +84 VDI....I stood scratching my head for a few seconds but decided to reflip the plug and drug some dirt out of the hole onto my cloth. I once again rescanned the hole to confirm the depth and just as before the signal was gone!!! #()_$#&^@ machine! Why are you doing this to me I was thinking! I can hear my wife yelling in the back of my mind " you were late to get the kids for a ghost signal " You fool!! Well to clear my mind I stuck my pin pointer in the hole to see if it hit anything metal. It rang out right in the bottom of the hole. So I carefully scooped some soil out and ran my hand under the coil of the XLT... Imagine my surprise when the machine beeped! After sifting through the dirt I saw a round coin. Similar in size to a large cent but it felt slightly heavy.

I had some water with me so I rinsed it off in the woods without rubbing it hoping to make out the bust of the large cent or perhaps a date. Well staring up at me was a sundial and the words FUGIO. It had a ton of detail from what I could tell. I showed Rob and rechecked the hole. After filling my hole we hightailed it back to my house so I could go grab my rug rats.....Well I cleaned the coin by simply rinsing the dirt off because I didn't want to jeopardize any of the detail.

After getting home and doing some research I determined it had to potential to have a decent value. Well tonight I decided to look at it through my loop. After doing so I noticed the double border on the reverse. It was clearly stamped off center but it appears to be double stamped. I did get a weight of the coin and it weighs 10.53 Grams.... That is about all I can determine. I was hoping someone here could give me an idea of value or variety. I had worked out a deal with Rob to trade him for a unused DFX with the super 12 and stock coil for the coin however after seeing the double stamping I figured I had better turn to the experts to see if I should trade him or not. I know the photos are poor quality but you can clearly see how much detail is on this coin and the double stamping. I will try to get better photos tonight but its tough. When the dirt bag's who robbed my car took my wallet and detector... They got my digital camera also. Sigh

Thanks for reading about my adventure

You'll be getting more replies!
I just missed your posting last nite, (it's a bit of work, I Know!)
Fantastic Find, & great Story!
A little karmic payback for your recent loss.
congrats, & Keep em Comin!

Great find that is a rare one for sure :icon_thumleft: good detail also Good hunt

Much better pictures are needed to determine variety and condition, which are the determining factors for what it may be worth. Can't tell what the error might be either, many of these were struck with damaged dies from clashing. It probably would not add much if any to the value. With the crude minting facilities and techniques it is difficult to find some of these early coins without errors. Colonial coins can be difficult to value, they are not like the newer US coins where mintage is known and is worth $XXX in X condition. It being dug will certainly reduce the value, but by how much is hard to tell. Collectors often value surface quality over detail. I have bought dug colonials for a small fraction of what an undug specimin would bring. If it is a rarer variety then that would help value tremendously!

me personoly would jump on the dfx! thats 1100 dollars there and a nice machine.(i own one)dfx willy

very excellent coin find and i would trad for the dfx seems more then fair

Its a bit hard to tell the double die on those pictures, but nonetheless its a superb find! :icon_thumright:

But before you go trading/selling make sure you know what you have and what its worth is.... your buddy may trade you for yours then sell it and end up with a brand new detector + $$$ in his pocket if its a special coin! :dontknow:

It would be great to see better pics of this find. I have never dug one. Definitely on my wish list though. Congrats

Great story and super find! Looks like a Banner Coin to me! Not sure why you would trade a find like that - don't think I would trade or sell any of my finds unless I had to. Congrats again!

put your camera on macro setting please and re-take the pics. for close ups like that, you HAVE to set it that way or it will be blurry like yours.

VERY nice FUGIO! The only one that I have found was barely Identifiable...this one is a gem with the possiblity of it being overstamped...WOW!

Most Fugios are pretty wasted. Your looks like it has a nice green patina :headbang:

Nice recovery! VPR

That is a beauty for sure. I would have to be carried off if I found one of those. Congratulations!!! I'll have to vote banner on that.

Great find!!!

Great looking Fugio cent, one of the best I've seen dug. If you could post some clearer photos I'd definitely vote banner. Thanks for taking the time to write up the details of a great story.
