Went back the other day to where I found the 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar. In that same field was surprised when I dug a 1796 Large Cent! Was deep around 8” down. It’s worn almost smooth but can make out LIBERTY and the date 1796. (The date is easier it see than I could get a photo of it, sorry). Very happy to be able to at least get a date as this is now my oldest coin even though it’s in such worn condition. Also find very close to this something I’m not sure about. Possible a small musket ball?? Some type of marble? If anyone has thought on this please let me know. Proves that even when you think a site has been worked over there may still be something to find. Thanks for looking

What a great find! If you can actually make out a date , its a bonus. Most of the time my old LC's are dateless. Congrats on your oldest coin. If this is your first 1700's coin.....extra, extra Congrats!

Yea that's a great find. congrats...:hello2:

Congratulations. I dug my first liberty cap a few weeks ago

Nice Capped Bust find brotha .. Congrats! I found my 3rd LC yesterday and it's another no date(Matron).

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Do you know the metal of the ball? Given the color, it could be canister shot. Usually you find more than one, tho. Here is a pic --

I had a site where I found about 25 of them. It was so much fun.

Im not sure except that it is non-metallic. I’m thinking maybe to clean it more to see. Maybe an old ball bearing but seems a little big for that. It’s a little beat up on one side but where I found it used to be a farm field so who knows.

Love the old coppers, congrats! :occasion14:

I see you've got your new 1831 as your avatar. Nice one! Gary

I can see the 1796. Nice job and congrats on finding such an old piece of U.S. history.

Great find! Still haven't made the 1700's LC club- Congrats!
