1800's Plantation Well Pump Handle?

Found this on a SC plantation near my neighborhood, it seems to be almost completely intact. Trying to decide if electrolysis and MicroBlasting is worth the effort. Looks like a really cool piece though! Note the tapered shaft, the square fitting at the end, and the threaded piece at the end of the tapered shaft...for a handle maybe?
