Earliest brass shotgun shells with centered primers were manufactured in the 1870'S...(as a side note, low base shells were used in shotguns with Damascus barrels...a hammered steel as opposed to forged steel)...high base shell used with forged steel barrels...which could withstand the pressure of added powder loads...
Prior to 1870's, all shells were made with a paper powder charge in muzzle loaders (exposed hammers with flint cap)
LeFever made one of the first hammerless-breakover shotguns still using Damascus steel.
Not familiar with the pin fire version.
