1826 N-9 (Scarce variety) Large Cent

My best find to date and one that will be hard to beat, but now I need to find some mid range dates
say 1827-1916 as my oldest coin before this was a 1917 wheat lol.

Still a very nice find. There are a lot of people who never find a Large Cent. We should start the Large Cent Club. LOL only kidding. Congrats on finding a piece of history.

Although worn, your photo was clear enough for me to attribute the variety as a Newcomb 9, which is a Scarce variety, there are 9 varieties of the 1826 Coronet Large Cent.
The two biggest telltale signs in distinguishing this variety is the closeness of the last S in STATES to the O in OF. Also, the date is wide and evenly spaced.
Some of the other factors match and some I cannot tell for sure from too much wear.

I did notice it was not the same as the common variety that was on coinfacts.com, but that does not really make it worth any more in this condition, right? Do you have a website or book that helped you attribute this to a Newcomb 9, I am always looking for more. HH,

Donny, in that condition it would have to be a very rare variety for a regular collector to be interested, so I would say in that condition as a Scarce variety, be happy to have it in YOUR collection.
Sometimes coins can be attributed from the auction website, like Heritage, free to join and I use it a lot to see what the corroded coins by variety are selling for. You can also sometimes use the photos for determining the variety, but not most of the times.

I have the book U.S LARGE CENTS 1816-1839 by Noyes, that I use to attribute those year coins.

Thanks for all the info Don. As my first Large Cent find I would not want to sell it. Looks like I need to look for that book, because I plan on finding more of these great coins. HH,
