I was in the outskirts of the Belleville Ontario Canada area this past weekend, pretty much bored out of my skull. I had my detector but just wasn't feeling good about any of my available choices to hunt. I eventually took a ride with a friend to go let someone's dog out. We pulled down this long dirt driveway and I could just feel what was at the end, something good. An old 1860's home that had been restored from the ground up. A great low cut lawn with tons of land. The owner happened to be home so we didn't have to let the dog out. I thought to myself do I ask this guy to detect? He seemed a bit wiley so I held back and didn't say anything.
Later on that night, he was at a family party, and I said the word metal detector to someone else.....The guy with the house overheard me and immediately says "Do you have one?!" I said yeah, I wanted to ask you if I could hunt your property, he instantaneously said "Let's go! I want to get one!" This was just as the sun was going down and I was leaving at 7am the next morning. Completely unprepared for Canadian mosquitos we headed back to his house. First target, a metal 1972 cow tag with his family father's name popped out. He got a kick out of that real fast. The very next signal in the dime range at 6.5", a beautiful 1917 silver Canadian nickel. This thing is smaller than a US dime, so I was happy with I had such a good signal for a small object at that depth.
The next hour got nasty as the mosquitos reigned their blood sucking quest as well as a steady rain to drench me. The next signals that I dug were nothing special, and I really wanted to actually stop and call it for the day! He wouldn't let me!! It was - come check over here, now over here, this spot was this, etc. I started to get a bit annoyed at the conditions and eventually said it was raining too much and I didn't want to mess up my detector. He allowed me to stop!
I didn't get to keep anything, he was pretty hell bent on keeping anything that came out of the ground, which was ok with me, I was just happy to find something. (It would have been nice to keep of course.)
Back here in the US yesterday, I managed to save this girl from certain death. I wasn't leaving until I found something good. I kept thinking large cent, since I have dug 2 other old coppers at this location. But since I was also unprepared for my good old hometown mosquitos, I almost got skunked. As the sun went, I was getting nothing but clad and one 47-S wheatie, tons of iron signals were giving me a headache....I couldn't take the mosquitos anymore, so I headed back to the car....I was about to stop swinging and just run back....but decidedon the "if you're walking you might as well be swinging" approach through an area where I got a few buttons before...it paid off....among the equipment tracks, I got a quarter signal at 3 inches, I didn't even use my tool to dig, I just stuck my probe in and it was right there in the soft dirt. I saw the "one cent" on the back and said finally!...no date visible at the time, right into my pocket, hunted for a few minutes more, (FYI adrenaline makes mosquito bites stop itching), nothing else in the area....after a little peroxide bath, I managed to get her clean enough for my liking. 1838 Large Cent....
