What started out as a nice Sunny weekend turned out to be one filled with many surprises. First was some of the strange thunderstorms and winds that occurred on Friday with a minor Tornado touching down and causing some damage to one of the local towns . Then what happened on Saturday made this weekend better. I decided to head to the 2 Old Cellar hole site that I found last year and try out a new 15 inch coil that I had purchased from a friend of mine John at Reliatech Metal Detectors here in New York. This site has given up plenty of excellent finds over the last year and a half , which I have mentioned in my earlier post on the 2 Old Cellar holes.

So that Saturday morning I headed out to that site with a friend of mine and as we arrived I started in an area that has given up some nice finds that were found very deep , so now after a short while and finding a few nice deep pieces of iron I finally get a hit that sounded kinda promising. So after digging I pulled out a leather strap rivet at 8 to 9 inches which made me happy that something was found with the new toy, so now continuing the next target was deep and bigger .. It was part of a pewter spoon that was at around 10 inches. Now with things starting to happen I was wondering what was coming next.. Sodown along the creek I went and after finding some more deep iron fragment and some what looked to be tin plate pieces I get a great hit a couple of feet away from a tree along the bank of the creek. Now I started digging and digging , and it figures a nice root to chop through so now down at least 12 inches I swing the coil and still a great hit so I keep digging and after the next shovel and about 14 inches down I see a large disk the size of a silver Dollar . Now with looking at the piece I see it's another Temperance Medal, yes I said another . This is the second one that I have found at this site . the first one was in rough shape and you could not see any words on it to really identify or date that particular piece. So with this one in such excellent condition you can see the date 1838 on the reverse and at least the time period of this find....No coin over 1844 has come out of this site , and finding 2 temperance Medals has made me wonder what went on at this very old site!

Now looking at this Temperance Medal I have noticed a very small name at the bottom of the face of this piece under the alter, It says ( Jones ). Is this the name of the individual that may have worn this Medal . Some people believed that if worn, it would bring good luck and good health . I will have to further research this and look back at the information on this site!

The other finds were also found at this site but some of the iron piece were not shown in the pics.....the small flat button was found at 8 to 9 inches also along the bank of the creek ....Thanks for reading and HH.......

Thats Great!!!! I never thought of it that way !! Well mabe i have had a few to many cold ones this holiday weekend.......lol haaa!!
Mabe someone is out there looking down on my well being !! Plus I'm still looking forward to hooking up sometime this fall and do some serious detecting , will have to talk about it in the near future! Take care..................! ;D

Looking at the two Temperance medals I noticed the first one has smaller writing around the top of the face of the piece and the second one has the large writing....so now we have two different medals on the same site...something else to look into! Here are pics of both Temperance Medals...........

Very neat medal. I love finding those kind of things. I had a 15 WOT and was not too crazy about it. I found it only gave me about an extra inch or so of depth and it had very limited application in the sites I hunt. But I just recently found a site that I could use it at - might have to buy another. ::)

Where do I get me one of them there hunting spots at?LOL Really cool dig.Congrats

Thanks for all the kind words and information given regarding the Temperance medals...what I just seen on my early map of 1850 is that c. Jones was the land owner at that time and in 1869 the name has changed and the property was owned by another person... Was he the person that made the medals or owned that particular medal....Thanks Seeker

Now there is something I can research for you! ;) Right up my alley! I have found several references to the Jones in that area and coming from Ireland....lets see where this mystery leads!
