A co-worker found this sword in a closet of his great aunt. We think that we might have identified it as a 1840 Cavalry saber, but are unsure. So, to all you experts out there, please help these rookies identify this sword. What its value also? In pretty rough condition. Thanks!!

Re: 1840 Calvary Saber???

I'm a little out of my league on this one but a quick internet search found an unmarked 1840 cavalry saber, with scabbard and in decent condition, selling on eBay for $260 in May of 2011.

I would guess your piece would bring considerably less.

looks like a 1840 (wrist breaker) Calvary but with no maker marks/dates and the scabbard I would guess a few hundred dollars.

Check the brass guard carefully. Sometimes there are marks on it. I have one with a star stamped on it that I found in May.
