For the last 3 months, I have been digging in a private residence that has produced some great finds. It’s occupied almost every Saturday for the past 3 months so regular yard sale trips have been out on hold.

Since we can’t go there every weekend, last Saturday was spent around my house with a few community sales on my list. One happened to be in a very old part of town and as luck would have it, I found a sale that was on a double size lot and stilll in the family that purchased it almost 100 years ago.

I was given free rein to dig around the garage and outbuildings which I happily did which brings me to my confusing find

I happened to stumble onto a large footlocker that was absolutely stuffed with military stuff like helmets, bayonets and knives. One of those blades happened to be a short sword.

My knowledge on swords is limited and Im absolutely lost as to what this might be. I found some civil war swords on my girlfriends family property last summer but this is nothing like those.

There’s no hilt or hand guard and it seems very short. The only markings I spotted were (2) J‘s on the tang and the letter ”I” or 1 on the reverse. Overall it measures 26 1/4” with and blade length of 21 1/2”.

Google lens haven’t produced many results so if any resident sword experts could chime in, it would really help identify this thing.

I don't know anything about swords, but that sure looks like a fun haul of blades!

Yatagan bayonet? It really is short sword sized. This is just a quick geus. I didn't look seriously.. yet

Oh yes, it was quite thrilling. It’s always fun to attempt to lift 5 gallons buckets of knives from over your head while standing on a questionable perch that could fail at any second.

I’ll probably end up with more in the coming weeks when I have time to return and search deeper.

Everything I know about swords I learned playing tabletop roleplaying games. 😏

Is it possible the lack of hilt is obfuscating identification/recognition?

ICBW, but I thought I discerned a camber/curve.
Maybe try searching short sabre or similar... (?)
