1840's House Reno Finds: Flat Button & Random Question

Hi all,

I'm new to the site, but an avid coin collector. I've been working to re-open an old fireplace, adjacent nook, and rear window in my 1840's Baltimore row house that was previously drywalled over. In the process, I was using my pinpointer on a large pile of dust and debris in a soffit area at the top of the nook next to the fireplace and recovered a few items of interest (old jade fragment, buttons, clasps, pins -- seems like someone's sewing box spilled and a few went through the floor boards.

Where it came from:

I found this flat button that looks pretty old. Appears to be brass, with backmark "BESTE QUALITAET", a star, and then two letters -- which I can't make out. Obviously, given the spelling it doesn't appear to be US-made. I was curious if anyone was able to date it for me, or possibly provide the origin.

I was also curious if there is a name for the basement alleyway that runs from the front of my property (very steep stairs) exactly between my neighbors home and mine (actually running under the part wall -- joists from both homes are visible). I've heard this was previously used for coal delivery, providing access to either the basement via a door in the alley (didn't see one, but could have been closed off) of the home and/or to the rear of the property where the cellar door is located.

I'm considering metal detecting this space since there are floorboards above it in some locations where items may have fallen. Think it's worth it?

It really doesn't matter what anybody thinks...

Man was given a brain to reason...might want to put it to use.

This reminds me of a comparative story about a person seeing a dollar bill flitting around in the wind...asking should I bend over snd pick it up?

Let's look at the facts...you have a home that's 176 years old...now what's the possibility that something could have been lost between the properties?

The other letters look like H D. Maybe the makers initials, & seems to be a German type language?

Indeed. Haven't come across this in any Google searches nor button backmark listings. Was hoping to get an approximate age. I've still got probably 5-6 inches of dust and debris to sift through in both the soffit and fireplace areas.

Need to find my keys to the coal alley and see if anything was left in there -- definitely worth a shot, and I need to insulate under there anyway.

Anyone know what protocol was regarding payment for coal delivery? If the delivery person took payment, seems there might be a good chance to him losing something during delivery.

someone could have buried a mason jar of Morgan Dollars in the floor down there. I will bet you find something of interest.

Oh and by the way the design alone on that button is enough to tell me 1820 - 1830's would be a very reasonable guess on the age

Is this how you want to be when Jesus comes back? Lol

By the way if you see a dollar bill in the wind definitely don't bend over to pick it up put your foot on it first or you will look like a fool chasing it 100 yards

Haha I'm not getting my hopes up too far -- much of the house has been previously renovated, leaving few places inside to hunt, and I think the coal alley space would be an odd location to choose to hide a hoard since it's between properties.

We shall see. I'll post updates once I get down there.
