I posted this over on the coins sections too Just thought I get a lot more responses here

OK so here is the story. I was metal detecting what used to be a old road dating back to the early 1800's up until the 1960's. Well I dug this flying eagle cent that is for sure. But it is in extremely bad shape But I looked at it really good and I can swear that it looks like a 6 at the end. I cant see the 185? I only see what looks to be a 6 or a 8.

Could I send it to PCGS or NGC and they could look at it and determine if it is a 6 or a 8 I am willing to take the risk if it's not too much money. And if it was a 6 go from there. Also one other question if it happens to be a 6 would it be worth getting grade in that poor condition or would they even grade it at all. I was reading they also do coin restorations if they can would that be worth it or not thanks.

Camera is not the best and the pics are the best I can do. I have a jeweler lope and that's how I can see a 6 or 8 but the lope is not the best either it is a 10x lope. You Can't see the date on the pics for some reason sorry

A "membership" to PCGS or NGC is only approximately $200.
An 1856 Flying Eagle Cent in G-4 condition, (per Redbook standards), is valued at $6700.
I once had the same dream as you, when I found my only FE cent. I was so impulsive since I couldn't read date, I tumbled it!? Don't do this. I was new to cleaning coins and an idiot. I still can't clearly read date on mine, but it now more resembles a 58 than 56.
So few '56s are out there. Be very careful.
Believe it's a 58. If it turns out to be a 56, your detecting career is complete. ;)

Peace ✌

Honestly even if it's a '56 I can't see it being worth nearly as much as any red book value. It's in such worn shape, and even good, detailed dug coins come back from PCGS and NGC as having "environmental damage" which makes them worth a fraction of what an "undamaged" coin in the same condition would be worth. It'd be cool knowing you had a '56 if that's what it turns out to be but I wouldn't be expecting to pay off a car or buy a new detector with it in that condition and being a dug coin.

TrpnBils, makes valid points.
So few 56's were minted, even in "dug" condition, I think they would still be quite valuable.
Only the ever powerful PCGS and NGC can tell.
Peace ✌

Leave it as is. That way it can be anything you want it to be.

sweet find ... i am not able to any part of the date,,, but i think the FE is one of the coolest looking coins mint regardless of date . happy huntinn

It kills me every time I pull an old copper and can't get a date or even an id of what the hell I jus found. Always left wondering if it's a rare one but just no way of ever knowing. It's a cool coin that's hard to find. I've got a stack of old coppers that I can't id. Makes me sad every time I walk by it lol

Hello,

Just enjoy the coin and remember the excitement of the find. Of course, if you must know send it off to the experts to be examined. If you have a coin dealer in your area they can send in for grading through their account for a small fee. Great find either way!

Regards,
