Found this today while detecting at a local recreation park near a tree. Found it with my AT GOLD about 1 ft down wrapped in a plastic zip lock. No idea why the owner did that but it's mine now. Also about 3 ft away I got another hit near tree roots. I hate tree roots. I dug down about 4 inches and found a ring with a root growing inside of it about ready to blow the ring up. When I 1st looked at it all I saw was a diamond glowing at me. It turned out to be a kids ring sz 5 and the "diamond" is fake but it got my heart racing for a second.

Didn't know they made ziplock bags in 1859. Nice coin though!

Awesome coin. It's on my wish list.

Congrats on that amazing find, I have a feeling that the previous owner of the coin did not want it to get stolen so they buried it in their yard, and never dug it back up, like a cache but not one. Definitely buried fairly recently unless they made plastic ziplock bags back then:laughing7:. Either way, amazing item to dig, or even just own. Most people will never find a silver dollar of any kind metal detecting ever, so it is amazing that you found one. I would have been ecstatic if I found one. Congrats on your once in a lifetime find!

I found a 1861 dollar but mine turned out counterfeit .It was plated looks like over brass. It maybe just the pics you posted but looks kinda like the rim on yours.

here are pics of mine hope yours is real. It should Weight: 26.73 grams

Rim looks off and I don't like the coloring, especially the stars. Weigh it. Looking for 26.73 grams. Looks to be in decent shape so I'd write it off if you get a difference by a gram a more..

Still exciting, and I hope it's real. Maybe a geocaching cache? Weird about the bag.

I agree, something looks "off" with it, I see what looks like copper/brass under worn of plating, mainly on the highpoints of the coin, where most wear was experienced wearing off plating.

21 grams. Booooo.
:(

:hello2: Totally lovely find & I hope it turns out to be authentic despite the weight problem. :hello2: Either way, cool deep find with mysterious past! :hello2: Andi

very cool, and also very odd.

I wonder if there might have been a Treasure Hunting's club hunt there at some point? Maybe an unclaimed planted coin?

Would still make my day! Real, not, planted, or antique zip bag! :)

Would make my day more if it was silver and not plated. ..

I don't know but Iv'e been told that counterfeit is cooler than real. Probably much rarer and any dollar is pretty cool in my book.

I want to see the ring!

Too bad about the knockoff - had me pretty excited to see it - We've seen way more G.W. buttons, and Massachusetts Pine
tree silver coinage, than we ever have of Seated Liberty Dollars on this site - They are mega rare as a detector find - On a genuine
one I would have voted Banner without hesitation ! (looks like brass showing through on the stars and Liberty's hair )

Nice find. Can't imagine why someone would put this coin in a plastic bag. But finders keepers.

Great find in any case. I'm still scratching my head about that ziplock bag. Looks like Ziplocks came out in 1968, so the counterfeit dollar must have been a recent plant.

I once saw a thread where a guy was asking if anyone has found or even seen anyone post a seated liberty dollar, no one had one.
