It's a real coin; but you may wish to have it checked out further since there were three different varieties to that coin.
The common variety is worth up to about $5 in VF-20 whereas one of the varieties in the same condition is worth about $125 and the other $350. The total mintage of all three was 9,579,000.

It was issued for the Province of Upper Canada, now Ontario; Canada, as a country collectively, formed Confederation in 1867 and was then made up of four provinces in that year

I was just wondering because I was too lazy to look it up! What are the three varieties? This is not a token or pattern but a legal coin for Upper Canada only!!! Amazing thank you

jolteon,
One issue is the 'common' coin, another issue is called Type I, and the other (would you believe) Type 2!!
Type (1 and 2) are 'double punched'. I leave it to you to research the specific differences between Type 1 and 2.

That one is in pretty good condition. I found one on my second time out with my detector but it's in bad shape. I can kinda make out a date when the coin is wet but it's really crusty and green when dry. Not really sure how to clean it better.

After doing some research I found out it is the common coin !!! Disappointing o well what are you gonna do I'm still happy I found it. Good luck hunting Tnet

That's a nice find ! I'm pretty high on Victorian coins of Canada (and everywhere else !)
Don't be too disappointed with that coin , I would be interested in hearing more about (seeing)
the collection of Canadian Large Cents that you found !

Alright remember even if you do not believe in my cache like everyone else give an opinion on the coins themselves I found all of these in one hole but you don't have to believe that. Then after I purchased a book and put them all in the book!! Here!

If you are wondering what the stars mean, they mean that I found that coin in the cache of 167! I do that in all my books! Now in the 1913 and 1908 Canadian pennies in the 5th picture you can see some dirt still on it!!! Thank you for being interested!!!!

Thank You jolteon ! for putting up those pics ! I do believe that you found them in a hoard (I hope to be as fortunate someday)

You know that is a first I really appreciate that!!

I probably won't do that but I do have to admit that is a cool ring to own!!!!

Somewhere out there is a 1964 Thistle sailboat (17 foot long), hull #1858. Inlayed in the teak on top of the centerboard trunk is an 1858 issue of that coin. I owned the boat for a few years.

Not sure what embedding in epoxy does to the value of a coin.

Well I'm pretty sure every one of us dreams of finding a cache, or a hoard of nice old coins ! I certainly do .

I know for a fact that the 1858 Canadien Penny had only 400,000 Made!!! That's all I know
