1860's Patriotic Button, Eagle Button & A Few Other Relics

Hello All,

I was able to get out the other day for some digging. Went to an early 1800's house and had a decent day. Not too many coins were found but some real decent relics. The 1860's Patriotic Button was a nice find and even through the dirt I could see had quite a bit nice gold gilt still left on it. The Eagle Button came a little while later in the hunt and I am not sure what it is although I am thinking a civilian blazer button. But if anyone has an idea it would be great to hear. All the other finds were nice to dig too.

That is a cool patriotic button. Nice to see all that gold on it.

Really nice finds. I love old buttons.

Because you asked:
Your "eagle button" is an 3-piece brass 1830s-to-1902 US Army Staff Officer's button. That type came with a narrow rim, a wide rim, or an extra-wide rim. Yours is the narrow-rim version, which means it most probably dates from before the 1870s.

Also, being a "small size" 3-piece US Staff Officer button with an iron back means it was used on the kepi's (hat's) leather chinstrap, not on the cloth uniform. (Ironback buttons tend to make a rust-stain on cloth... but that would be invisible on the kepi's black leather chinstrap.)

Thanks all for the good words

Thanks Cannonball Guy for the great information
