1866 Indian ans a flat button with eagle and shiels reverse

Went to a pounded out cellar hole no good targets just nails the IHP was found on the wagon road fifty yards from the site. Button found in a woods near same site. I've found a few of this type of button over the years. What's the deal with the shank in the middle of the eagle with shield?
