I was CW hunting today with a bud of mine, and got a chance to look at his relic collection. Among his items was a very unusual coin with seated liberty and the date 1866 on one side, and the other had been sanded smooth at one time, and has " Nathan B. Forrest Grand Wizard" engraved around the rim, and and "K. K. K." in larger type in the center. It also has been notched like it was meant to be worn. Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this?? This post was not meant to offend anyone, we just want to know its origin if anyone knows. He got the coin in Hernando Mississippi. BTW all I found today was a bunch of "tractor Iron", my first Indian!! ( 1904 ) a wheat ( 1948 ), and a 1945P Nickel. HH Joe

Wish I had better news, Joe, but this is a well known modern fake/fantasy item. Some may have been created from genuine coins; usually, though, the coins themselves are counterfeit.

Rich Hartzog cites it on his "Fakes and Fantasy Tokens, Medals, Exonumia" web page. Scroll down to "Ku Klux Klan Items" at...

Also, see this excerpt from the Antique Trader Guide to Fakes & Reproductions by Mark Chervenka:

I don't have a copy on hand at the moment, but I think it may have been mentioned in Peter Bertram's Fake Confederate ID Discs as well.

Thank you, I knew someone here would know. I gotta tell you, and I told him also, it feels "funny" a little too light in the hand. I was planning on taking a digital scale over there next weekend and weighing it. Even though it is "shaved" it felt too light to me. Thanks again, and Happy Hunting!! Joe
