Forgot to add, found in Virginia at my Uncles. The locket was given to someone in commemoration of a baby born Jan 2 1892.

I found the coin inside an old coin purse, it was face up so the trap door was face down, I think that’s how the paper survived.

Inside the coin purse were 5 wheat pennies, 1925-1955 + the remains of some play money. I think it was a kids pirate treasure buried around 1955.

Awesome find, but show us the other coins that were in there too! They are an important part of the story.

I don't know anything about opium lockets, what makes you think that is what this was used for? Doesn't look like it would hold enough to keep an addict happy for very long.
